The best advice I ever got was when my 10th board exam results came out.

There was a wooden board in my school where they painted the name of the kids who stood first in the board exams every year for the last 50 years. Given the insufferable nerd that I was, I wanted my name on that board. After ranking first through classes five to nine, in my boards, I stood third. My history teacher saw me upset and said, “Life is unfair. It is best to learn this lesson young.” It was cold-blooded but this advice has held me in good stead since.

In Greenlights by Mathew McConaughey, he talks about his bumper stickers, lines that stick, that make you think and can describe your philosophy on life. Lyrics, quick hitters, bumper stickers. The list that follows are lines that have stuck with me, changed me, reminders for the person I want to be, a code of conduct.

  1. You can put your energy into being good at stuff or seeming cool, but not both. Any energy that goes into seeming cool comes out of being good. (Paul Graham)

  2. Don't create imaginary constraints. A leading role, a blue ribbon, a winning score, a great idea, the love of our life, euphoric bliss...Who are we to think we don't deserve these fortunes when they're in our grasp? Who are we to think we haven't earned them? (Mathew McConaughey)

  3. You don't become confident by shouting affirmations in the mirror, but by having a stack of undeniable proof that you are who you say you are. (Alex Hormozi)

  4. The rose is a rose from the time it is a seed to the time it dies. Within it, at all times, it contains its whole potential. (Timothy Gallwey)

  5. You have no responsibility to live up to what other people think you ought to accomplish. (Richard Fenyman)

  6. All these people that I was jealous of, I couldn’t just cherry pick and choose little aspects of their life. If I am not willing to do a wholesale, 24/7, 100% swap with who that person is, then there is no point in being jealous. (Naval)

  7. Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity (or ignorance) (Hanlon’s Razor)

  8. Never assume the motives of others are, to them, less noble than yours are to you. (John Perry Barlow)

  9. A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, co-operate, act alone, solve equations, analyse a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialisation is for insects. (Robert Heinlein)

  10. The only valiant way to complain is to create. (William Blake)

Notes -

  1. I was wary of calling this week’s essay an essay since it is more of a borrowed list. So I looked up the meaning of the word ‘essay’ to see if I had any wiggle room. Turns out essay has two meanings -

    • a short piece of writing on a particular subject.

    • an attempt or effort.

While it is not the former, it is certainly the latter. So here goes 16.

  2. My favourite lists of advice are 25 principles of Adult Behaviour and Advice, like youth is wasted on the young.

  3. I would love to know your bumper stickers too.
